KonMari Lessons

If you’ve been paying attention to the Internet lately, you have heard the name Marie Kondo…or you’ve at least seen the memes about her KonMari method and keeping the things that “spark joy” for you in your home. While there are some aspects of her tidying that people are able to poke fun at, her methods have also inspired many people to reevaluate the things that they have in their lives and how it affects the spaces they live in.

I recently read Marie Kondo’s book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up which has sparked the tidying craze. However, I honestly couldn’t bring myself to read the book until after I watched the Netflix series “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.” For me, it helped to see her advice in action before I was able to fully understand what she meant by having things “spark joy” for me. The show gives different pieces of advice and guidelines than from the book, but it obviously all ties together.

With the KonMari method becoming a familiar word and practice, I decided not to do my regular book review format after reading this book. Instead, I wanted to share the lines from the book that sparked joy for me. I found that the advice Marie offers in her book can extend beyond the task of tidying up and can also give us insight into our lives as a whole. I’ve written these quotes down in a notebook where I can see them every day as I reminder of how I should approach each day.

“…when you put your house in order, you put your affairs and your past in order, too.” Pg 4

“People cannot change their habits without first changing their way of thinking.” Pg 15

“The key is to make the change so sudden that you experience a complete change of heart.” Pg 34

“No matter how wonderful things used to be, we cannot live in the past. The joy and excitement we feel here and now are more important.” Pg 114

“It is not our memories but the person we have become because of those past experiences that we should treasure.” Pg 118

“The space in which we live shoud be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.” Pg 118

“If we can have confidence in our decisions and launch enthusiastically into action without any doubts holding us back, we will be able to achieve much more.” Pg 184

“Life becomes far easier once you know that things will still work out even if you are lacking something.” Pg 187

“…pour your time and passion into what brings you the most joy, your mission in life.” Pg 205

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo

I’m reminded with these quotes that not only will I be tidying up my house and getting rid of the things I don’t need in my space, but that at the same time I’m going to be tidying up my life. As I do this, I will be taking the steps I need to become the person I am meant to be and to get rid of those that are keeping me from achieving that.
