It’s More Than Coffee

“Want to get together for coffee?”

That question can seem innocent enough, but sometimes it’s more than just a cup of coffee.

Coffee is the way I start every morning. Coffee is the way I sometimes end a day. But more often than not, it’s not just the drinking of a cup of coffee. It’s so much more than that.

“Let’s have coffee,” can mean a way of getting to know someone new. Getting together for coffee is a shared experience with friends. Going for coffee can be a way to take a break from the work day. Coffee – no matter how you take it – creates an environment that allows for open conversation.

Coffee allows for someone to hold on to something when they get ready to share something big. Coffee allows someone to focus on something other than themselves as they start to feel self-conscious. Coffee – when it’s warm (in my opinion) – can be soothing as the warmth fills you, especially on Fall days and Winter nights.

Coffee opens the doors to break the news to your best friend that you found out your husband was cheating on you. Coffee allows you to hold on to something when you feel like everything else is slipping through your hands. Coffee allows you to breathe in its scent and relax, even if it’s just for a single moment. Coffee allows you to warm your hands when the rest of you feels cold and numb.

Coffee opens the doors to meeting new people and to start a conversation with a virtual stranger. Coffee opens the doors to students learning just enough to know they can come talk to you when they need it. Coffee opens the doors to opportunity – opportunity to explore something new, even if it’s just a new flavor or blend. Coffee opens the doors to being at home in a cafe while you decide the direction your life will take, or grading papers.

Coffee is the great unifier – either you love it or you hate it. Very rarely is someone undecided on their feelings of coffee. But no matter where you fall (and for the record, there’s only one right answer), coffee allows for there to be an opening to the possibilitites of the future.
